HMS Westminster heads to The Middle East
The Royal Navy have sent another warship to the Middle East as fears surrounding tensions with Iran continue to grow.
HMS Westminster will set sail from Portsmouth Naval Base today in a bid to deter Iran from closing down crucial shipping lanes in the Strait of Humuz.
Dozens of Navy personnel may have already made arrangements for their military life insurance in anticipation of potential conflict with Iranian forces.
In an interview with The Daily Mirror, the ship's commanding officer Nick Hine claimed that his crew would be ready for anything.
He said: "It takes a tremendous amount of effort to get a complex and sophisticated warship ready for operations and I am extremely proud of my ship's company for the work they have done in getting us to this point.
"Operations are what the Royal Navy is all about and we are itching to get going. We sail into a region of heightened tensions and great challenges and we are ready and up for it."
Many of the ship's crew are likely to have only recently returned from her most recent voyage to Libya last year.
The move could well be in response to a recent statement from the Iranian government. According to The Portsmouth News, the Iranian government recently announced that they "will definitely" be closing the Strait of Hormuz.
