Lucky escape for Army pilots after helicopter crash
Two British Army pilots were left contemplating a lucky escape after crashing an Apache helicopter into a 132,000 volt power line last night.
The pilots were forced to make an emergency landing in a field after their helicopter clipped an overhead line around 15 miles away from their base in Wattisham, Suffolk.
However, an Ministry of Defence spokesman announced that the pair were lucky enough to be able to avoid any serious injuries following the incident.
He told BBC News: "We can confirm that an Apache made a controlled precautionary landing in a field near Ipswich after a wire strike at approximately 22:20 GMT on Tuesday. Both crew were uninjured."
The crash highlights the need for Army servicemen to invest in forces insurance during any military operations regardless of its magnitude.
According to The Mail Online, 375 homes in the region were left without power as a result of the crash. Although power was restored to the majority of homes prior to midnight, some were still left deprived at 07:00am this morning.
The MoD confirmed that they would not be revealing the identities of the servicemen at fault, as is standard procedure. However, it was announced that Prince Harry, who recently gained his Apache qualification s in Wattisham, was not involved in the incident.
